While Paraty is famous for its bay, the real magic for many lies in the mountains. The Serra da Bocaina mountain range is a vertical wall of rainforest that traps moisture and feeds hundreds of crystal-clear waterfalls (cachoeiras). For travelers looking to trade salt water for fresh, 'waterfall hopping' is the ultimate day trip. Here are the highlights.

Cachoeira do Tobogã: The Natural Rock Slide

This is Paraty's most iconic waterfall. A large, smooth granite rock face creates a natural slide about 20 meters long, ending in a refreshing natural pool. You'll see local 'surfistas de cachoeira' (waterfall surfers) sliding down standing up—we highly recommend you stick to the seated position for your first try! Nearby: Just above Tobogã is the Poço do Tarzan, where a small wooden bridge crosses a narrow gorge, leading to a charming bar built directly into the rocks.

Cachoeira da Pedra Branca

Considered one of the most beautiful in the region, Pedra Branca features two distinct drops and a wide, shallow pool perfect for swimming. It is located on an old farm property and requires a small entry fee, but the well-maintained trails and pristine environment are worth it.

Timing Your Visit

The appearance of Paraty's waterfalls changes dramatically with the seasons. Summer (Dec-March): The rainy season. The waterfalls are at their most powerful and impressive, but the water can be cloudy and trails muddy. Winter (June-Aug): The dry season. The water is crystal clear and sparkling, but the volume is lower and the temperature is... bracing!
